Liza Smirnova (b. 1992) is a textile artist from Russia, currently based in Lisbon, Portugal. Working at the intersection of textiles, painting, and hand embroidery, Smirnova explores sensory experience and the ways in which inner emotions are transformed through colour, form, and material. She graduated from the Moscow Theatre and Art College with a degree in costume design. This background fostered her enduring interest in craftsmanship, materiality, and the theatrical potential of visual language. Despite their vibrant and expressive appearance, her works emerge through a slow and deliberate process, often requiring several months of meticulous handwork. Her long-term engagement with textiles gradually expanded her practice beyond the two-dimensional surface. Since 2021, she has also created textile sculptures, as well as felted and knitted objects. In 2018, the Moscow Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art presented her retrospective solo exhibition VYSHTAVKA. Threads and Love. Her work has also been exhibited in group exhibitions in Paris, Singapore, and Saint Petersburg. Smirnova believes that art should be a natural part of everyday life rather than exist exclusively within museums and galleries. This philosophy is reflected in collaborations with brands including & Other Stories, Sela, Yandex, H&M, ADDA Gems, and OMUT. Her work has appeared on the covers of Artists Magazine (USA) and The Textile Art Magazine (UK), and has been featured in publications including Le Fil (Paris), L’Officiel Singapore, Broderies (Paris), among others. Her works are held in private collections around the world.
