Vishtavka / All-Russian Decorative Art Museum

September 30, 2018 — October 15, 2018.

Sketches, drafts, clothes and pictures were present at a one-man exhibition of Lisa Smirnova — over 100 exhibits, the result of 10 years of her work

Lisa Smirnova is known primarily as a designer thanks to numerous collaborations with Russian fashion brands and small brands. In the project «Vishtavka. Threads and Love», she is presented in the museum as a modern artist.

In the «traditional» sense, embroidery is an ornament that emphasizes the texture of the material. In the «traditional» sense, embroidery is an ornament that emphasizes the texture of the material. However, Lisa Smirnova considers embroidery as an independent type of art, similar to painting. The designer implements her works within the museum-exhibition context, and clearly demonstrates the process of artistic production (from the sketch to the embroidered picture), outplaying the «High Art» situation and «artist-creator», speaking of love.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the boundaries between fashion, design and fine art have been wiped cleanю. For this reason, the exhibition traditionally built according to the biographical principle seems like a fun joke, because embroidery as part of fine art has long been emancipated, and the methods of exhibiting modern art have changed beyond recognition.
